With heavy hearts and deep sadness, we announce the passing of Joyce Elaine Shelton, a cherished wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, who left this world peacefully at her home in Union, Kentucky, on January 2, 2026, surrounded by her loving family. Joyce was born on July 23, 1951, to Robert and Norma Ockerman (nee Johnson), who, along with her brothers Richard and Robbie II, have preceded her in death.
Joyce was a remarkable individual, renowned for her loving spirit and boundless kindness. As a dedicated secretary for Walton Verona Schools, she exemplified hard work and commitment, touching the lives of many with her warm personality. Loving and witty, she had a unique ability to care for others while also bringing joy and laughter into every room she entered. Joyce loved big and was deeply loved by those fortunate enough to know her.
Those closest to Joyce were always her priority. Her proudest accomplishments were her family, and it is through them that her memory will live on. Joyce is survived by her beloved husband of 22 years, Michael Thomas Shelton, who together with their children, embraced the light and love that she radiated every day. She leaves behind her son Michael Todd (Tammy) Shelton, her daughter Danielle (Darren) Weed, and her grandchildren—Heather Shelton, Tabitha (Jesse) Sams, Mike "MJ" Shelton, Tiffany Shelton, Allison Shelton, Kaylee Weed, and Lindsey Shelton. Joyce was also a doting grandmother to numerous great-grandchildren, each one a testament to the love of family that she so fiercely cherished. She will also be deeply missed by her beloved sister, Shelly (Kenny) Dunhoft and several nieces and nephews who she cherished.
Joyce's passions extended beyond her dedication to family and work. She found joy in baking delicious treats, cooking hearty meals, quilting beautiful pieces of art, being part of the wood carving community with her husband, Mike, and traveling to explore new experiences. Her enthusiasm for showing quarter horses and her love for retail therapy showcased her multifaceted spirit and her zest for life. Joyce also had a passion for ice cream, in her honor please stop by Graeter's and enjoy a black raspberry chip milkshake.
Joyce’s visitation and funeral service will be held at Newcomer Funeral Home in Northern Kentucky, located at 4350 Dixie Hwy, Erlanger, KY 41018. Visitation will take place on January 9, 2026, from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM, followed by a funeral service beginning at 1:00 PM, continuing until 2:00 PM.
In lieu of flowers, donations are suggested to St. Elizabeth Cancer Center - specifically the Breast Center.
