Dennis Albert Meyer Sr.
May 16, 1942 – Aug. 24, 2024
Denny Meyer was a lot of wonderful things. Devoted husband. Proud father. Fun grandfather and great-grandfather.
But at his core, he was a provider. An excellent one. He sacrificed for his family, working extra shifts to make sure his wife and children had everything they needed and most of what they wanted. He got up in the middle of the night many times for overtime runs in a salt truck, sometimes even on Christmas. One of those nights landed him on the TV news.
Mr. Meyer died Saturday at Christ Hospital. He was 82. He fought heart problems and breathing issues until he just couldn’t anymore. He provided one last thing for his family – the gift of knowing it was OK to say goodbye, that he was ready to go. He had a great sense of humor, even in his last hours.
He was born in Cincinnati to Clarence John Meyers and Thelma Pearl Hildebrand, both of whom are deceased. His son, Darrin, also preceded him in death, as did baby sons Donnie and Hubert.
He and Linda Wilson married in 1963. He felt terrible that he went to the hospital last week on their 61st anniversary. He tried to hold out another day.
Linda survives. Also surviving: sons Dennis Albert Meyer Jr. (Jane); David Alan Meyer (Krissie); and Patrick Aaron Meyer; and daughter, Shadow Marie Mae Meyer (Jaron). He will be missed by his 15 grandchildren and one great-grandchild: Brian, Madelyn, Devin, Colleen, Sara, Shaylin, D.J., Johnny, Nyla, Nick, Gabriel, Jack, Shyla, Jaycob, Micah and Atley. They carry with them great memories, from him teaching Shaylin about nature on their walks along Aquadale Lane when she was barely more than a toddler to, as he got older, watching his westerns with him, with the TV turned up loud.
He was endlessly proud of his kids. He was so proud of Denny Jr.’s military service. He loved to tell the story of visiting the army base for graduation and feeling like a VIP as Army leaders showed him around. He talked about Dave having such a big heart and being good with numbers. He used to love to hear Dave sing.
As for his only daughter, he always said how much Shadow impressed him because she was so smart, so independent even at a young age and such a great mom.
Mr. Meyer attended St. Michael’s Catholic School until 7th grade, then Oyler Junior High and Central High School. He studied business at South Western Junior College.
He started at Masonite Fabricators as a helper in the saw department and rose to the level of assistant plant superintendent. He worked in management for several companies, including Formica, before joining the highway department and the Metropolitan Sewer District. He retired from MSD.
He was a 32-degree Mason with the Scottish Rite.
