Charles Tanner passed away peacefully on Monday, December 1st, surrounded by the love of family and friends. After a long stay in the hospital and skilled nursing facility, he quietly slipped away to rest.
Charles was preceded in death by his parents, Charles Frank Tanner and Virginia Lee Tanner, and by his dear son, Gary Wayne Tanner. He is survived by his devoted siblings, Betty Steine, Nancy Dauwe, and Dennis Tanner; his children, Shirley Adams (John) and Charles Dalton (Kim); his 10 grandchildren and many great grandchildren.
A Harley man through and through, Charles treasured his motorcycle. He often shared stories about how the hope of riding again helped carry him through his battle with lung cancer in 2006. After recovering, he returned to the open road and enjoyed many adventures, including Bike Week in Daytona and unforgettable rides to Sturgis. His love of vehicles extended to cars as well. As a young man, he raced them, and later in life he took great pride in restoring his 1974 Corvette.
Through the years he cared for many dogs, especially his beloved dachshunds Pig, Doc, and Hap, who were loyal companions and sources of comfort.
Charles will be remembered for his independence, grit, and the passions that made him uniquely himself. His presence will be missed and lovingly remembered by his family and friends.
A celebration of life will be held in his honor on Wednesday, December 10th, from 4:00–6:00 pm at the G.H. Kalb Gathering House – Florence Nature Center, 7200 Nature Park Drive, Florence.
