Barbara Sekula, lovingly known as Mammy, passed away peacefully on July 27, 2025, at the age of 85 after a courageous battle with terminal bladder cancer. She entered eternal rest with her daughter by her side — just the way she lived: on her terms, surrounded by love, and never letting go without a little fight.
Though she held many titles in her lifetime — daughter, sister, mother, aunt, and grandmother — the one closest to her heart was “Mammy” to Carter. From the moment he was born, their bond was something special. What began as simply helping care for him during the workweek quickly grew into one of the greatest joys of her life.
Mammy poured her heart and soul into this role. She loved Carter fiercely and unconditionally, always calling him “her boy” with a pride and tenderness that never wavered — not even in her final days. Their time together was a beautiful blend of routine and magic: long walks around the neighborhood, countless rounds of the beloved “table game,” and competitive matches of Uno and checkers (which she almost never won, and which Carter made sure she never forgot).
Barbara was never one to find joy in cooking, which made her lifelong love of TV dinners all the more fitting. Still, she had a special appreciation for the home-cooked meals lovingly prepared by her daughter, Melissa. Melissa would deliver them with excitement—only to be met with Barbara’s signature mix of gratitude and resistance. The reason? Barb hated to waste a single bite. She’d stretch those meals out for a week, eating the same dish breakfast, lunch, and dinner if it meant nothing went to waste. That was Barb—practical, stubborn in the best way, and full of heart.
Mammy was loved by all who knew her. Whether you met her once or knew her for a lifetime, her bold spirit and unforgettable charm left a mark. She was full of life—sassy, particular, and never shy about saying exactly what was on her mind. With a quick wit and honest humor, she could light up any room and turn even the simplest moment into something memorable. Her presence was unmistakable, and her impact lasting.
Barbara is survived by her daughter, Melissa (Mark) Fleckinger, and her son, John Kreutzjans; her granddaughters, Amanda Fleckinger and Sara (Nate) Fletcher; and her great-grandchildren, Carter Fleckinger and Raya Fletcher. She is also survived by her brother, Robert Stark, Jr.; her niece, Bridgette (Tony) Spaeth; and her great-nephew and great-niece, Brandon Spaeth and Paige Spaeth.
She was preceded in death by her beloved parents, Robert Stark, Sr. and Ruth Stark (née Whitson), and her cherished grandson, Brian Fleckinger — a loss that remained deeply felt in her heart
A celebration of her life will be held on August 4, 2025, at Newcomer Funeral Home, Northern Kentucky (4350 Dixie Hwy, Erlanger, KY 41018). Visitation will take place from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM, with a service to follow.
