Lillie Carlisle 1918-2020

Lillie Carlisle was born in Greenville, SC as the third oldest of eight children born to Amanda Niles. The family moved to Cincinnati when they were very young to live with Amanda’s sister in College Hill. They all remained in Cincinnati, went to school, and became Buckeyes. She only had one dress, so she washed it every night and ironed it every morning for school. It was a poor family, so everyone had to pitch in with chores, which they all hated. Amanda worked during the day and cooked for her children every night, and boy could she cook. The girls eventually married and had children of the own, but Lillie only had two children, Frederick and Sylvia. They all lived downtown for many years until moving away, but still near each other.

Lillie went to work at the former General Hospital, now University Hospital. She love working in Central Supplies so much that she stayed 35 years. There were always reunions, parties, birthdays and other fun with the family, but she really enjoyed Bingo, Horseracing, and concerts with her daughter-in-law. All the family stayed in Cincinnati, but the boys went to the military and the girls stayed home to raise the children.

Lillie didn’t like traveling so she swore to never fly in a plane…ever. However, in 1966 her only daughter went to live in Europe… so, Lillie boarded a plane and headed for Europe! She liked it so well that she almost didn’t come back. But yearning to see her family again returned her home.

She was an avid church go-er, where she wore those big hats that looked like the Empire State Building. In 2015 as her health was declining, she entered a nursing home, where she continued to play Bingo. Loved by all for her wonderful smile, Lillie went to live with GOD on Friday December 11, 2020 at 3:30AM. She always liked the sunshine, and on that day the sun shone bright.

She leaves behind her only remaining sister, Margaret; her daughter, Sylvia Yorke; and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
She will be forever missed.
