CONKLIN, Peggy Ann, age 81, of Rocky Mount, Virginia passed away on November 23, 2014. She was born in Washington, D.C. on January 31, 1933 to Kermit and Mary Dyer Sloan (nee Shumate).

She was preceded in death by her parents, Kermit Via Sloan and Mary Dyer Sloan and long-time partner, Morris (Mack) McClure. Peggy is survived by her son, Thomas (Lynn) Darbie; her brother, Jim (Debbie) Sloan; her grandchildren, Elizabeth (Karl) Gunderson and Christopher Darbie; her great-grandchildren, Oscar and Edward Gunderson.

Peggy is an alumnus of University of Mary Washington, Fredericksburg, Virginia. She began her career as a journalist at the Courier-News, (a Gannett newspaper) in Bridgewater, N.J. She moved to Virginia, where she had deep roots. Her father was from Ferrum, Virginia and her mother’s family has lived in Highland County, Virginia for many generations. As the founder and publisher of the magazine Blue Ridge Traditions and later as host of a weekly radio show on WYTI, Peggy’s work celebrated the lifestyle and history of Southwestern Virginia. Peggy enjoyed gardening, traveling, reading and caring for her dogs.

In loving memory of Peggy, contributions may be made to Hospice of Cincinnati, Inc., P.O. Box 633597, Cincinnati, OH 45263-3597, or the University of Mary Washington, 1301 College Avenue, Fredericksburg, VA 22401.

Graveside service will be held at a later date at the family cemetery in Highland County, Virginia.
