Lela went to Hughes High School and attended Mount Zion United Methodist Church in her early childhood. She then became a member of Southern Baptist.
She was preceded in death by her father, Ozie Davis; mother, Elizabeth Davis; grandchildren, Dwight Gaines and Timothy Gaines, Jr.; siblings, Virginia Burnett, Mildred Martin, Hilda Davis, Ozie Davis, Jr., Jackson Davis, Donald Davis, and Elizabeth Austin. Lela is survived by her children, Gregory Winston (Charmaine) Gaines, Sr., Valerie Denise Hill, Timothy Eric (Phyllis) Gaines, Janet Gaines; grandchildren, Derek Gaines, Gregory (Alicia) Gaines, Jr., Brian (Michelle) Gaines, Erica Gaines, Davonda (Craig) Jackson, Antonio Hill, Germaine Mitchell, Judy Gaines, Yolanda Hill, Nicole Gaines, Justin Gaines, Antoine Phillips, Khadijah Gaines, Dion Gaines, Portia Gaines, and Alexis Gaines; 29 great-grandchildren; sister, Priscilla Maxey; many nieces and nephews; and a host of other family members and friends.
Lela retired after working 32 years at University Hospital as a nursing assistant. She didn't stay retired for long, she obtained her STNA and retired after working 10 years at Madeira Nursing Home. Lela had an active lifestyle; enjoying bowling, played cards with family as "Joe Block", loved fashion, and hair stayed on point. Lela loved her family and would spoil her grandchildren. Lela would call her family on their birthdays and would start singing, "So today is your birthday." Her favorite mottos were, "Never let them see you sweat" and "only the strong survive."
Visitation will be Tuesday, September 25, 2018 from 10:00 am - 12:00 pm at Newcomer Cremations, Funerals & Receptions - Northwest Chapel, 7830 Hamilton Avenue, Cincinnati, Ohio 45231. Celebration of Life will follow at 12:00 pm.
Lela will be laid to rest at Spring Grove Cemetery, 4521 Spring Grove Avenue, Cincinnati, OH 45232
