1930 - 2017

ASMUS, Frederick J. age 86, of Springfield Township, Ohio passed away on Thursday, January 5, 2017. He was born in Kalamazoo, Michigan on April 13, 1930 to John F. and Alma J. Asmus (nee Kloth).

He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Pauline Bauer Asmus; sister, Virginia Armstrong. Fred is survived by his beloved wife, Cathy Bonewell (nee Cook); children, Doug (Bonnie) Asmus, Paula J. (Brent MacMorland) Asmus, Kathy M. (Mohsen Marzouk) Asmus; grandchildren, Kimberly (Christopher) Kahmann, Kristofer (Katie) Asmus, Kellie Asmus, Paige MacMorland, Laura MacMorland, Kyle MacMorland, Keith Asmus, Lianna Marzouk; great-grandchildren, Izzi Kahmann, Paulsen Kahmann, Anabelle Asmus; nieces, nephews, and a host of other family, shirt-tail relatives, and friends.

Fred graduated with an engineering degree from the University of Michigan, and began working for General Electric. He took a leave to serve in the Army signal core, stationed in Frankfurt, Germany. He returned to work at General Electric, and eventually transferred to the Evendale facility. He retired from GE in 1993, after 39 years as a cycle design engineer. He spent a portion of his career working on the CFM-56 engine, the world’s most popular commercial jet engine.
He married his first wife Pauline Asmus, in 1958, settling in the Greenhills and Springfield Township area. After raising their three children, they spent their leisure time enjoying family, and traveling around the world. After Fred retired, he dove into his hobby of big band music, teaching history of big band music classes at UC, and creating a weekly big band radio show at WMKV, 89.3 FM. He met his second wife Cathy Bonewell there.

Gathering will be from 5:00 pm - 8:00 pm on Monday, January 9, 2017 at Newcomer Funeral Home - Northwest Chapel, 7830 Hamilton Avenue, Cincinnati, Ohio 45231. Memorial Mass will be at 11:00 am Tuesday, January 10, 2017, at St. John Neumann Catholic Church, 12191 Mill Road, Cincinnati, Ohio 45240.
